Altimeter

An instrument measured in feet, used to measure the altitude of an object above a fixed level. The measurement of altitude is called altimetry. Basically telling pilots how high they are flying.

Altimeter Display

As you can see below, it is a photo of a typical altimeter. It is basically calibrated based on the standard ISA. It has also shown the different indications the altimeter has.

As you can see, there is a altimeter setting adjustment knob, the purpose of this knob is to compensates for actual variations from the standard atmospheric pressure and also to set to prevailing pressure at sea level.

It looks like a clock, there is a short hand and a long hand. Long hand indicating 100ft pointer and short hand indicating 1000ft.

We must also know how the internal mechanism works that gives the reading. Static pressure fed into the instrument case so when the altitude increase, the static pressure decreases. With that, the capsule expands and is being amplified by the mechanical linkage to the pointer. The variations in temperature are compensated by bimetallic strip in the linkages.
